Frequently Asked Questions
Long Valley Oil provides answers to your home heating questions.
How do I know how much oil to order?
To know how large a delivery your tank can accommodate, you need to know your tank’s capacity. A standard above ground Oilheat tank, such as you would find in the basement of a house, holds 275 gallons. To verify your tank’s size, look for a label on the tank.
Use the chart to determine how much to order for a 275-gallon tank. You can order up to the full available capacity as indicated in the right-hand column.
If you have an underground oil tank and you know the capacity, check the gauge to determine the available capacity.

What do I do if my heat stops working?
There are several possible explanations for a heat outage. There could be a minor electrical problem. You could be out of oil. If you have a steam boiler, the boiler might need to be refilled with water. Please follow the steps below and you might be able to resolve the problem yourself.
1. Locate the emergency switch (or switches) for your oil burner. It has a red panel and is usually located at the top of the basement stairs or next to the burner. If it is switched to the OFF position, change it to the ON position.
2. Locate your thermostat and set the temperature above the room temperature by several degrees. This should signal the oil burner to turn on within a minute or so.
3. If it still doesn’t come on, next check for a flipped circuit breaker or a blown fuse.
4. You can also check the oil tank to make sure you have oil.
